Top of the VDP is the “erste lage” wines – divided by grosses gewaches for dry and the sweet wines. Labeled by pradikat and product of hand harvesting

 

Mosel

  • regarded for its pure light, low alcohol reisling
  • Goldkapsel – indicates additional sweetness due to higher must weight

 

The mosel is divided into 6 regions

  1. Bernkastel – mittelmosel
  2. Burg Cochem
  3. Saar
  4. Ruwertal
  5. Obermosel
  6. Moseltor
  • the soil here is dominated by dark blue Devonian slate
  • the slate and the river allows these vines to ripen well where the average temp is only 8
  • the saar is a tributary of the mosel

 

Rheingau

  • River rhine flows through this anbeguite
  • Essentially one lonng south east facing slope
  • Slate dominates these vineyards
  • Traditional flute shaped bottle known as the rheingau flute
  • Assmanshausen is the center for spatburgunder
  • The rhine is joined by the main river

  1. Johannisberg (asmmasnshausen, reudesheim, johannisberg,winkel, hattenheim, hallgarten, erbach, kiedrich, eltville, hochheim main)

 

Rheinhessen

  • Directly South of the rheingau and is bordered by the rhine
  • Muller – Thurgau is the most planted grape ahead of reisling in the region
  • The premier villages are (Oppenhiem, Nierstein, Nackenheim)

 

Pflaz

  • One of the warmest wine growing regions in germany
  • Also has the rain shadow effect that Alsace has their mountains are the Haardt-mountains
  • Make up of sandstone, calcium based limestone
  • The best vineyards are located in forst

Wine villages (Kallstadt ungstein, bad durckheim, wachenheim, ruppertsberg)

Nahe

  • best vineyards are located along the nahe river, a tributary of the rhine they are sweet in style

 

AHR

  • most of the AHR’s wines are red with spatburgunder being the predominant grape
  • has only one beriech which is walporzheim-ahrtal

 

Franken

  • Home to the bocksbeutal – squat flask shape
  • Silvanner grape does well here

 

Mittlerhein

  • small anbaugebiet that follows the rhine, step slate riverside slopes that are predominatly trocken style Riesling

 

Baden and Wurttembery

  • Baden covers a large region along the French border both regions mass produce

 

Austria

  • Austrias vineyards are mostly confined the the eastern postions of the country

  • Wachau is home to many of the best vineyards along the Danube
